I have heard this before - "Snickers" was the name of a beloved pet horse owned by the Mars family. Reference to follow if I can dig one up.

The original Snickers candy bar was introduced in 1929 by Frank and Ethel Mars, reportedly named after their family's favorite horse.

That would be Snickers.

The site shows the picture of the horse, but I guess it doesn't come right out and state that the bar was named after a horse.
