Quebec City is called the "Gibraltar of North America", sometimes called the "Gibraltar of the North". It is situated on a hill overlooking the St Lawrence River close to the entrance to the Gulf of St Lawrence. It controls the St Lawrence Seaway System and the Great Lakes region. Traditionally it controlled the entrance to much of North America.
