It depends on factors such as the type of screen you have (CRT vs. LCD) and the resolution that you choose or was set for that screen when you bought it.
A decent monitor, according to the site below, should have around 1024 x 768 pixels.

You can usually change the number of pixels displayed on the screen by changing the computer's display settings, up to a maximum resolution supported by the computer and monitor.
