Why are the people of West Indies called West Indians? Are they originally from India?

No, they are not originally from India. From Wikipedia: "These islands are called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed here in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies (in Asia)."

Thus, the inhabitants became "West Indians".
