The Penguin 'Dictionary of Surnames' by Basil Cottle (my copy published in 1967)
gives two possibilities. Bing is a 'locality' name, deriving from where a person l
lived, and could be either from the Old English word meaning 'hollow' or the Old
Norse word meaning 'stall, bin; slag or refuse heap'. (p 48 in my copy)
