The mineral manganese in quartz gives amethyst its special hue.

No. First of all, manganese is not a mineral but an element. Second, an amethyst does not contain manganese. It's rather iron that is responsible for the hue.
The color of amethyst has been demonstrated to result from substitution by irradiation of trivalent iron (Fe3+) for silicon in the structure.
