I don`t know who was the first to use the one-sided telephone routine, but I believe Bob Newhart was the most successful. He had one routine about the British getting a call from Sir Walter Raleigh about the tobacco in the American colonies.Brilliant and hiliarious. He also won an Emmy for one of his comedy albums in the early 1960s. Hope that helps.

Bob Newhart was renowned for his routines, in which he gave us one end of a phone conversation, conveying the gist of the humor through his straight-faced responses to the unheard contributions from the other end of the line. His album "The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart" was a #1 hit in 1961 (displacing Elvis), and receiving a Grammy for Album of the Year. He once said that his favorite routine was 'Abe Lincoln vs. Madison Avenue', in which a slick promoter has to deal with the reluctance of the eccentric President to agree to efforts to boost his image.
