The Emu egg is made up a three distinct layers. The outer layer has a distinctive texture and is dark green to almost black in color. When the dark outer layer is carved away, a hard, waxy, teal colored layer is exposed. As this layer is removed, a white layer becomes visible.

Beneath the dark outer layer there are layers of blue, blue-green, brown or grey with each successive layer paler than the last. By scraping away layers aboriginal artists produce intricate and very beautiful artworks.
