A tower may be either free-standing or part of a larger structure. A tower "is a tall man-made structure, always taller than it is wide. Towers are generally built to take advantage of their height and can stand alone or as part of a larger structure. Towers as defined here are meant for regular but not living access by humans, and are self-supporting (or free-standing - no guy wires). Thus continuously habitable buildings and skyscrapers and radio/TV masts do not qualify. Chimneys, electricity pylons, and most large statues allow human access for maintenance, but not as part of their normal operation, and are therefore not considered to be towers."
