What is the purpose of the holes on the sides of men's hats? Decoration, ventilation, a receptacle for feathers, or what?

They are referred to as "ventilation holes." See pith helmet on link #2.

Zbeck is correct; the holes are for ventilation.

Feathers are placed in the hat band; and, holes in hats are no very attractive or stylish.

However, what confuses everyone is, why do sweat bands cover the ventilation holes from the inside?
