Shawinigan is a city located on the Saint-Maurice River in the Maurice area in Quebec, Canada.
It may mean "south portage", "portage of beeches", "angular potage",or "summit" or "crest".French language.

The word "Shawinigan" means "portage at the crest" in Algonquian, referring to the nearby waterfall. Before 1958 the city was known as Shawinigan Falls.
