What is the non-literal meaning of George Orwell's title: "Keep the Aspidistra Flying"?

Perhaps it's an exhortation to the struggling lower class to keep on battling and not give up. (Aspidistra's are seen in most windows of the lower and middle classes)

Alternatively, it's a statement that the lower-middle classes can't be beaten since the aspidistras thrive despite mistreatment. (It's been a long time sing I took English lit!)

The aspidistra is a common plant used decoratively. Orwell uses the plant to symbolize commoners, the lower class, of society. To keep them flying is to maintain their pride, to raise the value of common man from the soil to the sky. Alternatively it can be seen as a flag, or banner, waving in the wind. Declaring to all that the lower class can be common, and proud of who they are at the same time.
