As far as I can tell it was:

George H.W. Bush: Yale's "Fancy Dan"

In the song "Young Abe Lincoln", Johnny Horton sings:-

He out talked Douglas or fancy Dan
Yes, young Abe Lincoln make a tall, tall man

Presuming Douglas, is Senator Stephen Douglas, "fancy Dan" is still unknown. Was it ever a nickname for John Breckenridge?
