What is believed to be the first baby of the new millennium has been born to a couple in New Zealand.
A baby boy was born at just one minute past midnight in the western suburbs of Auckland, but the child's parents have declined to speak to the media or release any other details. According to the BBC's correspondent in Auckland, David Willis, the child's parents are anxious to retain their privacy despite offers of sponsorship and endorsements, which could have made the birth a highly lucrative affair.
The first baby girl of the millennium is thought to be Tupou, who was born nine minutes later, also in Auckland. She is Milika and Sifoni Fetuani's seventh child.
