Where did the double bass violin get the nickname "doghouse bass"?

This seems to be an "unknown." According to one respondent, "when Leo Fender came up with the Precision Bass, he said "This will allow bass players to get out of the doghouse." (Nathan Parker on talkbass.com) However, others seem to believe it's a "no one knows" question.

Okay. It WAS Leo Fender, designer of the Precision bass violin, who inspired the nickname when he said it would "'free the bass player from the big doghouse,' referring to the size of the double-bass that was prevalent in bands of the day."
