The movie is NOT a true story. The Coen brothers were said to have been influenced by the story of Helle Craft, whose husband murdered her and disposed of her body in a woodchipper. This happened in Connecticut in 1986. Jerry Lundegaard, Shep Proudfoot, and the other criminal are purely fictional characters. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Helle_Crafts https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fargo_%28film%29
