Why was Hawthorn originally called 'The Mayblooms'?

From a flower that was common in the Hawthorn area of Melbourne. They became the Hawks in 1943, because a football team named after a flower just is not right! :)
Another older name for the Hawthorn bush is the Maybloom, hence the appropriateness. It's also known or a fishy unpleasant smell - remarkably apposite or those civilised Victorians who support other teams. :-)
