Assuming it was named after a person who was the Cotter that the Cotter pin was named for?

Such a real handy gaget. The cotter pin was invented by one Ira J. Young ,who applied for the U.S. patent in 1912. Mr. Young was from St. Louis , Missouri at the time according to the present day leader in manufacturing this product - Western Wire Products.

1640s, perhaps a shortened form of cotterel, a dialectal word for "cotter pin or bolt, bracket to hang a pot over a fire" (1560s), itself of uncertain origin.
