Wayne Fontana founded the Mindbenders in 1963 to be his backing group. They were known as "Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders." When he left the group (reportedly in the middle of a concert), they continued as "the Mindbenders." Their first post-Wayne single was "Groovy Kind of Love", a success for them, and later covered by Phil Collins.

Not only is it the same band, but Eric Stewart, who was the guitarist in the band when it backed up Wayne Fontana, and then took over as lead singer after Fontana split in 1965, and Mindbenders bass player Graham Goldman, who joined the Mindbenders shortly before their breakup, eventually became half (and later all) of 10cc and also co-owned Strawberry Studios in Stockport.
