In 1978, he recorded the time announcement for the U.S. Naval Observatory Master Clock, which as of this 2008 posting can still be heard by dialing (202) 762-1401 or (719) 567-6742. His voice was originally recorded on mechanical machines, but transfered to digital media later.

The time service department of the United States Naval Observatory runs the national clock for the United States. Cell phones, GPS and the internet are dependent on this ultra- precise master clock. Fred Covington is the voice behind the clock. If you call 202-762-1401, it is Fred's voice that you hear announcing the time.
