Both terms describe bell towers, but usually a belfry is used to describe one that is attached to a main building, while a campanile is located nearby but is a free-standing structure, not part of the same structure.

1. A bell tower, especially one attached to a building.
2. The part of a tower or steeple in which bells are hung.
