Did people really eat the animals in the Havana Zoo after the Soviet Union collapsed?

This 2015 report on Cuba by the US Global Investment and Business Center at least hints at the possibility, although I can find no details.
On page 165 it says
"Cubans had to resort to eating anything they could find, from Havana Zoo animals to domestic cats. Because of the overthrow of the Soviet Union and other countries, Cuba experienced economic difficulties, which led to a drop in calories per day from 3052 in 1989 to 2600 in 2006."
