According to The New Shell Book of Firsts by Patrick Robertson it was Max Fleischer's Song Cartune 'Come Take a Trip in my Airship' of 1924, which opens with a 25 second sequence in which the animated figure of a woman in a white dress speaks some patter as the lead-in to the song.

The Sound-on-film synchronization was by Deforest Phono film.

The first all talking cartoon was Paul Terry's 'Aesop's Film Fable''Dinner Time' of 1928 which premiered on 1st September while 'Steamboat Willie' did not reach the screen until 18th November.

The first one in the UK was 'The Jazz Singer' with 'Orace the 'Armonius 'Ound which premiered on 15th December 1928
