Why is an American pint smaller than a British pint?

The US was using English Units of measurement from inception and the UK (and Commonwealth) switched to Imperial Units with the British Weights and Measure Act in 1824. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pint

It takes 20 fluid ounces to make an imperial pint, but only 16 to make a US pint.
