In Mangroves and similar plants that grow in highly salty water, it was thought that any excess salt not filtered by the roots was diverted to a single leaf on each branch. As the leaf collected the salt it became yellow and dropped off when another leaf would take its place. It has now been shown that isn't strictly correct.
