The primary papal bull prohibiting the enslavement of indigenous people (and all other people) was 1537's "Sublimis Deus". It was accompanied by an apostolic brief, "Pastorale officium", which declared that anyone enslaving indigenous people would be automatically excommunicated, but that brief was withdrawn under pressure from Spain in 1538 (in "Non Indecens Videtur").
