The South African giant girdled lizard was given the scientific name Smaug giganteus, and the lizards themselves are now referred to by their genus name (Smaug). They have been named after Smaug, the dragon in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit", in part because Tolkien was born in the region of South Africa where they are also found.
