In WW II era submarines how did the attack periscope differ from the regular periscope?

Basically the attack periscope was much smaller and more difficult to detect. It had a more limited field of vision, but a higher magnification.

To add to the above answer, the attack periscope also had a horizontal and a vertical reticules for determining the speed and range (distance to) of the intended target for creating the torpedo firing solution.
