Gregor V, previously Bruno of Carinthia, was Pope from 996 to 999. He came from the Salian family and was instigated by Holy Roman Emperor Otto III. elevated to pope. Because of his origins in the Duchy of Carinthia, he is also referred to as the first German on the papal chair.
