Arduin of Ivrea became king of Italy in 1002 after the death of Otto III, Holy Roman Emperor. Arduin was elected by the Italian nobilty whereas the Germans elected Henry II as Otto's successor. In 1004, Henry invaded Italy and defeated Arduin. Subsequently, Henry II was crowned king in Pavia and restored the Ottonian line in Italy.
