It seems the Etruscans cremated their dead and kept the ashes in an urn that was in the shape of the deceased . The Latin worn for "to burn" is "ure." That became the Italian "buste."

The Latin for burn in this case is far closer than that, it's ambustum, hence bust. It also gives its name to combust which means the same thing.
