Is there a new type of warship being designed which may eventually replace aircraft carriers?

If you are referring to the idea put forth to add a type of Light Aircraft Carrier (CVL) to the fleet, the CVL concept doesn't really replace the current Nimitz Class or Ford Class, the idea is for the CVL's to respond to smaller and shorter duration conflicts and where necessary work alongside the larger Nimitz or Ford Class carriers.

Nothing new in the Light Aicraft Carrier concept...in the Royal Navy at least...from the Colossus Class of Light Fleet Carrier in 1942, to the Post War Centaur Class 1950/60's & Invincible Class 1970/80s.
