How did the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee get its name?

The site was settled about 1815 when John Ross, who was later made a Cherokee chief, established a trading post (Ross's Landing) on the river. In 1838 it was renamed Chattanooga, derived from a Creek word for nearby Lookout Mountain meaning "rock rising to a point."
