In 1913, Sarah Bernhardt appeared in "Adrienne Lecouvreur", a 20 minute film adaptation of the play of the same name. Bernhardt had appeared in the play, originally written by Ernest Legouvé and Eugène Scribe in 1849, in 1905 on the stage, before subsequently playing the lead in the abridged film, which she also co-wrote. Directed by Henri Desfontaines and Louis Mercanton, and co-starring Max Maxudian as Maurice de Saxe, the film is now considered to be lost, with only still photographs remaining.
