Everything but the Girl was a musical duo consisting of vocalist Tracy Thorn and instrumentalist Ben Watt. They met while both were attending the University of Hull in the early 1980s, with each having a solo contract with independent record label Cherry Red Records. Deciding to form a group together, the pair chose the name "Everything but the Girl" from the advertising slogan of Turner's Furniture, a furniture outlet located on Beverley Road, one of the major thoroughfares leading out of the city, which carried in its window a card saying "for your bedroom needs, we sell everything but the girl."
The address of Turners: 34-38 Beverley Rd, Hull HU3 1YE, United Kingdom. The building is still standing(two trees now partially obscuring the building). It's now occupied by the Hull-Humber Chamber of Commerce.
