The Trofeo Matteoti is dedicated to Giacomo Matteotti, an Italian politician who openly spoke against the Italian Fascists. In June 1924 he was kidnapped and later stabbed to death with a carpenter's file. His murder is widely considered the beginning of Mussolini's dictatorship in Italy.
