The largest sea evacuation occurred on September 11, 2001 after the World Trade Center was attacked. There were close to 500,000 people evacuated to Staten Island, Ellis Island, and New Jersey using 150 ferries, Coast Guard boats, privately owned boats, and tugboats. It is known at the Great Boat Lift of 9/11.
