Yet when all have been unmasked, Parolles is still unrepentant: “Simply the thing I am/ Shall make me live” (IV, iii, 333–334). In his steadfastness to his own bluster, trickery, and general unscrupulousness, Parolles emerges with minor dignity, a quality that the perpetually slimy Bertram never achieves.
