Orycto comes from a Greek word meaning 'to dig'.

Cuniculus comes from a Latin word meaning 'tunnel'.

Both words point to the European rabbits' home in the wild, a system of tunnels known as a warren where a large family group of rabbits live together.

Lagus was a character in ancient Greek history known as the 'rabbit' of Macedonia.
