Coloured golf balls were developed 25 years ago as a marketing gimmick for playing in the snow, but Jerry Pate, the 1976 US Open champion, played with an orange ball made by Wilson in the early 1980s and won the 1982 Players Championship using it. Earlier that year, Wayne Levi had won the Hawaiian Open with an orange ball, the first time a player had won a PGA tournament with a non-white ball.
