Does anyone know the meaning of the movie title, Straw Dogs?

I think the local bullies would be the 'Dogs', and by standing up to them and defeating them the character played by Dustin Hoffman shows that they are made of nothing but 'Straw'.

I believe Straw Dogs is a very similar expression to Paper Tigers

The phrase Straw Dogs comes from Chinese Taoism and refers to straw dogs made for sacrifices. The phrase is used in the verses of Lao Tzu, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_dog
