Who was the first US president pictured on a coin?

The 'Washington Pieces' dating from 1783 to 1795 featured the image of George Washington, but those were medals, not coins.

The commemorative Lafayette dollar issued in 1900 also featured George Washington (and the Marquis de Lafayette), and was the first coin to do so.
