It wasn't a real plant, but a Tudor Rose, as described here

Hmmmm ... just seen a picture of both the silver AND brass threepenny bit here

and I'm not in the slightest convinced that is a Tudor Rose on either of them ... could be a thistle??

Barrow Boy is correct. It's a thrift plant, also known as Alba or 'armeria maritima' to latin scholars.
