What is the meaning of the word RIDDINGS as in place names such as the Riddings library in Scunthorpe?

According to the above site, the origin is --
RIDDINGS. A frequently found minor name with a history of at least 650 years ... From OE hryding (properly *ryding) 'assart', with a verbal base.
So it means an assart, i.e. a bit of forest which has been cleared and put to agricultural use. This is presumably what the Riddings area of Scunthorpe used to be.
