The name given to what is considered to be a violent supernatural presence, characterised by loud, spontaneous noises and with objects being moved/smashed, as if thrown by some unseen force. Poltergeists are often thought to be the spirits of people who have died tragically, or having had an unhappy life. The name comes from the German words 'poltern' (to knock) and 'geist' (ghost).
