The STM has a very sharp tip of only a few atoms in diameter. (Definition of 'sharpness' is probably recognised as the 'thinnest and finest' edge or point.) Accordingly the tool that make the 'finest' cut would apply. Since individual atoms can be moved around by a STM, you can't get much finer than that!
