In Barbara Belford's biography of Bram Stoker, she writes that one name Stoker was to give Renfield was Flyman, not only alluding to his diet but punning on the theatrical flyman, who handles the 'flies' or scenery curtains. Stoker worked in theaters as manager of Sir Henry Irving, famed actor of the time.
