Before pouring tea into a glass, it may help to put in a teaspoon to prevent the glass from cracking. Why should this trick work?

because the spoon acts as a 'shock absorber' taking heat from the water before it reaches the glass. my daddy taught me that when I was a wee tacker.

The idea is the the hot liquid (tea) comes into contact with the spoon (METAL) before it comes into contact with the glass. This reduces the temperature of the liquid as it hits the glass and reduces the chance (however slight) of the glass breaking.
