Why was the name 'Oil of Ulay' changed to 'Oil of Olay' - was it a case of making the name internationally consistent?

Yes it was.
Even distinctive brand names,chosen for the local market, can also be confusing to consumers abroad. Oil of Olay, for example, was marketed in Europe as Oil of Ulay until recently, when globalization led the company toadopt a single brand name.
