Who actually wrote the song 'the real thing', was it Johnny Young or Ian Meldrum or someone else?

It was a Johnny Young composition. Molly Meldrum was his manager at the time. Half the stations in Sydney wouldn't play it, initially, because it was so long.

I thought so, it was just me and a mate were discussing it over a drink earlier and we had different opinions as to the origin of the song

I believe Russell Morris covered the song but that Johnny Young (of Young Talent Time) actually wrote it originally. It has been covered a few times since even by Midnight Oil. I just wasn't sure of the original writer.
